In 2012 NAVA’s president, John Hartvigsen, commissioned the anthem of the North American Vexillological Association, modeling it on the anthem of the International Federation of Vexillological Associations (FIAV), which had debuted in 2003. He asked for “something dignified but not stuffy”. Composed by longtime member Mason Kaye as a gift to NAVA; the executive board christened the anthem the
Winchester Fanfare.
NAVA members first heard it at the opening of the 47th Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City in October, 2013. The title alludes to the city in Massachusetts where
Dr. Whitney Smith, the father of modern vexillology, founded and operated the Flag Research Center.
The executive board approved the use of the anthem for use at all NAVA events. It features trumpets, French horn, trombone, and tuba.
