The Bedford Flag

Dr. Whitney Smith conducted a study of the Bedford Flag, the company color of the Three County Troop used at the Battle of Concord (19 April 1775) and currently displayed at the Bedford (Mass.) Public Library. The Flag Research Center published his findings in 1971. Its significance, Dr. Smith wrote, is that “the flag provides a bridge from the earliest colonization of New England to the dawn of its contributions as the first area to take up the cause of American Independence.” Full text access courtesy of the Flag Research Center.

Regimental Colors in the War of the Revolution

As the mid-1970s saw the United States observe its 200th anniversary of independence, Revolutionary War flags were of great public interest. The Flag Research Center reprinted the American flags portion of Gherardi Davis’s “Regimental Colors in the War of the Revolution” in The Flag Bulletin vol. 16, no. 1 (Jan.-Feb. 1977) and later provided as this offprint. What Flag Flew at Bunker Hill?

In the mid-1970s, vexillologists disagreed as to whether the flag that allegedly flew at the Battle of Bunker Hill, (17 June 1775) had a field of red or blue. Emmet V. Mittlebeeler, together with Dororthy Claybourne, researched the flag’s history and their findings were first printed in The Flag Bulletin vol. 17, no. 2 (March-April 1978) and later provided as this offprint. The authors concluded that the scant contemporary historical evidence, rather than resolving the question of the field’s color, “leads us to the belief that no flag at all was used by the American forces as a whole.” Full text access courtesy of the Flag Research Center.
