What Flag Flew at Bunker Hill?
In the mid-1970s, vexillologists disagreed as to whether the flag that allegedly flew at the Battle of Bunker Hill, (17 June 1775) had a field of red or blue. Emmet V. Mittlebeeler, together with Dororthy Claybourne, researched the flag’s history and their findings were first printed in
The Flag Bulletin vol. 17, no. 2 (March-April 1978) and later provided as this offprint. The authors concluded that the scant contemporary historical evidence, rather than resolving the question of the field’s color, “leads us to the belief that no flag at all was used by the American forces as a whole.” Full text access courtesy of the Flag Research Center.
